Debat ‘Democracy in Africa’ Afrikadag

PvdA-Europarlementarier Kati Piri spreekt tijdens het hoofddebat van de Afrikadag over de staat van de democratie en ontwikkeling in Afrika. Het debat wordt gevoerd in het Engels.

The high level policy debate ‘Democracy in Africa’ will discuss the main topic of the Afrikadag 2014. Joyce Banda (former President of Malawi), Mo Ibrahim (founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation), Hans Bruning (director of Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy), Kati Piri (MEP for the PvdA), James Mwirima (Cew-It International, Uganda), and André Gerrits (professor at Leiden University) will discuss what democracy and development resembles for African countries.

Many African countries have been, and still are being, labelled as societies where corruption, bad governance and a limited implementation of human rights result in weak democratic states. However, this is not true for all African countries. There are also success stories of democratisation in Africa where free elections result in good governance. But what is the relationship between democracy and (economic) development? What are the most important priorities? Is good
