European price limit for electricity from cheap energy sources

Today the European Commission presents its measures against high energy bills. Far-reaching measures to lower energy prices and help Europeans pay their bills.

The Commission proposes a price cap on electricity from cheap, renewable energy sources. In this way, the profits of those energy producers are more in line with their actual production costs. Everything above this ceiling goes to the Member States to help consumers. And, according to the Commission, aid can be given in many ways: direct income support, tax reductions, green subsidies, etc.

Energy saving measures

The Commission is also coming up with new targets for energy savings. We must consume less, but above all consume less during peak hours, when we are highly dependent on gas. Because what you don’t use, you don’t have to generate.

Solidarity contribution

The biggest profiteers must bear the most responsibility in this energy crisis. I do not think it is okay that we ask people to do more if we do not also tax the large surplus profits from the fossil industry. Fortunately, the Commission is proposing a mandatory solidarity contribution from the fossil fuel industry on their profits this year.

Much to my disappointment, there will be no ceiling on (Russian) gas. There is still too much disagreement between the member states about this, and the Netherlands is also against it. Hopefully, energy ministers will come to an agreement on this on September 30, when they meet again to decide on the European Commission’s plans.

De Europese Commissie presenteert vandaag haar maatregelen tegen de hoge energierekening. Ingrijpende maatregelen die de energieprijzen moeten verlagen en Europeanen zullen helpen om hun rekening te betalen.

De Commissie stelt een prijslimiet voor op elektriciteit uit goedkope, duurzame energiebronnen. Op die manier zijn de winsten van die energieproducenten meer in lijn met de daadwerkelijke productiekosten. Alles boven dit plafond gaat naar de lidstaten om de consument te helpen. En die hulp kan volgens de Commissie op vele manieren: directe inkomenssteun, belastingverminderingen, groene subsidies etc.

Energiebesparing

Ook komt de Commissie met nieuwe doelstellingen rondom energiebesparing. We moeten minder consumeren, maar vooral ook minder verbruiken tijdens piekuren, wanneer we erg van gas afhankelijk zijn. Want wat je niet gebruikt, hoef je ook niet op te wekken.

Solidariteitsbijdrage

De grootste profiteurs moeten wel de meeste verantwoordelijkheid dragen in deze energiecrisis. Ik vind het niet ok dat we van mensen vragen meer te doen als we niet ook de grote overwinsten uit de fossiele industrie belasten. Gelukkig stelt de Commissie een verplichte solidariteitsbijdrage voor van de fossiele industrie op hun winsten van dit jaar.

Tot mijn grote teleurstelling  komt er geen plafond op (Russisch gas). Hierover bestaat nog te veel onenigheid tussen de lidstaten, ook Nederland is tegen. Hopelijk komen de energieministers hierover tot een akkoord op 30 september als ze weer bij elkaar komen om te beslissen over de plannen van de Europese Commissie.
